Other installation requirements

Particular IEC60079-14 installation requirements from the standards

Cables and terminations: #

Cable routing. Where cables pass from one safe area to another via a hazardous area, the cable type and installation in the hazardous are shall be appropriate for the EPL requirements of that area.
Unused cable coresFor non-IS circuits, unused cores in multi conductor cable in the hazardous area shall either be connected to earth or adequately insulated by means of terminations suitable for the type of protection. Insulation by tape alone is not permitted.
Stranded ends. The ends of multi-stranded cores shall be protected against separation by the use of cable lugs or core end sleeves, or by the type of terminal, but not by soldering alone

IS Cable Requirements #

The requirements for IS cables will be specified in the system documentation.

Cables need not be mechanically protected since the energy in an IS circuit is below that which is necessary to ignite a flammable mixture, even if a spark is produced at a break in the cables.

  1. Insulation between screen and SWA or braid.
  2. Screen (optional)- normally earthed at one point only, which is usually the barrier earth bar.
  3. Individual insulated conductors.
  4. SWA or braid (optional) – normally earthed at each end.

Cable screens and armour

Screens of IS cables are required to be earthed at one point only (usually the zener barrier earth bar), as specified in the documentation.
