In hazardous areas, wherever possible, cable runs should be continuous and without interruption. Where discontinuity cannot be avoided, the joint, in addition to being mechanically, electrically and environmentally suitable for the situation shall be made by
- An enclosure having a type of explosion protection suitable for the Zone or
- Using epoxy or compound filled cable jointing kit or
- Using heat shrink sleeving in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
Whichever method is used, the joints must be mechanically, electrically and environmentally appropriate. Conductor connections are required to be made by:
- Compression connectors, or
- Secured screw connectors, or
- Welding or brazing.
- Soldering is permissible if the conductors being connected are held together by suitable mechanical means whilst being soldered.
The above points are taken from the IEC 60079:2007. They are not covered in the 2013 edition, but are expected to be reinstated in later editions.
