Competent Persons

Technicians, or operatives as they are called in the IEC60079-14 standard, are required to have sufficient knowledge to achieve the correct selection and installation of explosion protected equipment in hazardous areas. This knowledge includes:

  1. An understanding of the general principles of explosion protection;
  2. An understanding of the general principles of the various types of explosion protection and their marking;
  3. An understanding of the design features of the different types of explosion protected equipment upon which their safe operation is dependent;
  4. An understanding of the content of equipment certificates, including the information for correct installation, and the related sections of BS EN 60079-14.
  5. A board understanding of the inspection and maintenance requirements of the different methods of explosion protection as given in BS EN60079-17.
  6. Familiarity with the particular techniques to be used for the selection and erection of equipment as given in IEC60079-14;
  7. An understanding of the additional importance of permit-to-work systems and safe isolation for safe work on explosion protected equipment.

Before any installation is started, the installer should examine he area classification drawings and familiarize himself with the location and extent of the zoning and the required EPL’s.
