Pressurisation can provide explosion protection for a wide range of instrumentation or electrical equipment – there is no limit to size, within reason, which can be accommodated.
Typical examples are motors, control & instrumentation cabinets, oil drilling control consoles, visual display unit (VDU’s), gas analysis equipment, control rooms and switch rooms.
There is a maximum practical size or weight limit for flameproof equipment (in particular rotating machines) above which handling becomes difficult. A pressurised machine would be significantly lighter than a flameproof machine of the same rating.
For applications such as analysers, there will be a containment system within the Ex p enclosure, which could be a source of release for flammable gas or vapour.
