Electronic and instrumentations are always as risk from surges and transients caused by power faults or nearby lightning strikes. Surge suppression devices (transient voltage suppressors or TVS’s) are often fitted close (within one metre) to the parts of the loop requiring protection.
Surge devices may be classed as simple equipment if they are not energy storing or energy generating. Examples include TVS’s incorporating gas discharge tubes, voltage dependent resistors, and diodes.
